Rip Currents

A rip current runs horizontal to the shore line. It is a channel of water that is moving back to the ocean.

These strong currents pose a hazard to swimmers by pulling them further away from shore- not pulling them under. Rip tides can appear foamier, darker and are deeper than the surrounding water. There may also be debris in the water. One of the greatest dangers to swimmers is panicking or tiring because they are swimming against the rip current. You must swim OUT of the rip current or remain calm until help arrives.
